Responsible Detecting
Digging Britannia supports the NCMD Code of Conduct and responsible metal detecting. These are practical group rules to help protect land, finds, wildlife and the reputation of our hobby.
- Get permission. Do not trespass. Make sure the landowner/occupier has given appropriate permission before detecting.
- Know the site. Do not detect on protected/designated sites unless the appropriate authority has expressly permitted it.
- Dig neatly. Use a suitable tool, keep disturbance to a minimum and replace plugs and soil carefully.
- Leave no mess. Take rubbish and unwanted metal away with you. Never leave sharp or dangerous objects on the surface.
- Respect the countryside. Close gates, avoid crops, protect livestock and wildlife, and follow the Countryside Code.
- Report unusual finds. Stop and seek expert help if you encounter human remains, ammunition, hoards or potentially significant archaeological remains.
- Know Treasure law. Potential Treasure has legal reporting requirements. When in doubt, seek advice rather than guessing.
- Be an ambassador. Be polite to landowners, other land users and the public. Protect the reputation of responsible detecting.
