Finds, PAS & Treasure
Recording archaeological finds helps build the evidence for Britain's past. In Wales, PAS Cymru is the route for recording many archaeological objects found by the public.
What to record
- Object type / description
- Material, measurements and weight where possible
- Photographs of the object
- Exact findspot information — keep accurate records
- Date of discovery and relevant context
Treasure: Potential Treasure in Wales must be reported to the relevant Coroner within 14 days of finding it or realising it may be Treasure. PAS Cymru can help with the reporting process. Do not clean, alter or dispose of a potentially significant find before getting advice.
Good practice for group digs
Keep findspot information accurate, agree recording arrangements with the landowner, and encourage members to submit suitable archaeological finds to PAS Cymru. Potential Treasure and major finds should be handled promptly and discreetly.
